ITS SILVER FOR MUTAZ BARSHIM AT WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

04 Mar 2018

Birmingham, 4 March 2018, Aspire Academy graduate and Qatar’s superstar athlete Mutaz Essa Barshim has another accolade to add to his burgeoning medals cabinet after claiming silver in men’s High Jump at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, the UK, on Saturday 3rd March.

The reigning IAAF’s 2017 Male Athlete of the Year and current Outdoor World champion was beaten to gold by Russia’s Danil Lysenko who cleared 2.36m while Mutaz failed to clear the same height with his three attempts and finished second.

Germany’s Mateusz Przybylko was third with a 2.29m clearance. Lysenko and Barshim had cleared three heights on their first attempts and were the only two to attempt the 2.36M jump. Both jumpers failed at their first two attempts. While Mutaz failed for a third time, the 20-year-old Lysenko soared over the bar to clinch the title.

It was sweet payback for the Russian, who had lost to Barshim at the IAAF World Championships in London last year. Barshim has been the leading jumper this season with 2.38m jump at the Asian Indoor Championship in Iran last month
