20 Jun 2016
Riccione, 20 June 2016. Aspire Academy students put on credible performances and recorded some notable success at this year’s Italian Junior Squash Open, one of Europe’s grand prix junior events.
In his final ever junior tournament, Aspire graduate Umair Zaman finished a credible 3rd in the U/19 event. After losing out in the semi-finals to the Swiss number 2 seed Umair fought hard to take third place in his final playoff match. He narrowly won the deciding game 11/9 taking a podium position. As Umair now moves out of the junior category he will combine tertiary study at Qatar University along with joining the PSA world senior ranks.
In the U/17 event Hamad Al-Amri finished in 9th place after winning his last three playoff matches. Physically it was evident against the other juniors of his age that Hamad is now is able to compete with Europe’s best. Some tactical errors however were the difference between him reaching the quarter finals or further in this event.
Waleed Zaman also took 9th position in the U/15 event. Still only 13 years old Waleed played some excellent squash to beat two higher ranked Swiss players in his last two matches. He demonstrates he is on the right track with still more than one year eligible in this age group.
In the U13 category foundation student Yousef Elsaka reached the quarter finals ultimately finishing in 8th place.
