AL-TAMIMI AND AL-AMRI SUCCEED AT GCC CHAMPIONSHIP

09 Apr 2016

Manama, 9 April 2016. Outstanding achievements of Aspire Academy’s squash team at the 22nd ‘GCC Individual Championship’ in Bahrain from April 6-8: Aspire graduate and scholarship holder Abdulla Al-Tamimi was successful in defending the men’s title, while grade 10 student-athlete Hamad Al-Amri was also victorious in the under 17 event.

In the men’s event Abdulla had to overcome a difficult quarter final opponent in current Asian Games Champion Abdullah Al-Muzayen from Kuwait.  After losing the first two games Abdulla was able to turn the match around playing a more patient brand of squash and eventually won in a tight fifth game. Following this result, Abdulla convincingly won his semi-final and final matches in straight games to win the title for the second successive year.

In the under 17 category, Hamad Al-Amri fulfilled the promise he has shown as a young junior player to capture the title. Seeded fifth for the event, Hamad beat the top three Kuwaiti players to win the tournament, in doing so becoming only the fourth Qatari player to ever win a GCC individual title.
