The Qatar Junior Open was to be the first of two major Asian registered junior events held at the Khalifa Squash complex in as many weeks.
With participation from countries such as Malaysia, Pakistan, Jordan and India the competition proved to be a tough test for the ASPIRE students but one in which they each fared well.
A fine performance in the U19 event saw Abdulla Al-Tamimi win the title. He took out the number one seed Suleman Khan from Pakistan 3-0 as well as 3-4 seed Rishi Tandon from India 3-0 in the semi-final. Current Asian U17 champion Ahmed Alsaraj was to be Abdulla’s opponent in the final, a player whom Abdulla has had great difficulty with in their previous matches. This time though on home turf Abdulla was not to be denied and continued his good form dispatching Alsaraj 3-1 to win the inaugural Qatar Junior Championship.
Azlan Amjad and Umair Zaman both played well to win 3rd place in their respective age categories. Other ASPIRE students Abdulwahab Al-Ishaq made the semi-finals of the U15’s and Ahmad Al-Homaidi reached his first ever semi-finals in the U13 event.
Abdulla Al Mass, a former squash student and current ASPIRE academic student now participating as one of the Qatar Federation players managed an 11th place finish in the U17 age category. Unfortunately Bader Al-Hajari was unable to take his place in this event due to an ankle injury attained the week prior.
With most of the international participants staying on to compete in the Doha Junior Open we look forward to some more great squash this week.
