?Doha, 9 December 2014. The squash team of Aspire Academy returned to Doha today after competing in the “Swiss Junior Open” in Zurich, Switzerland between December 4 and 7, which is a major European competition that has been a constant on the European junior circuit for many years.
Of the eight Aspire students competing the highest finishing position came from Foundation year student Abdulaziz Al-Ishaq who took 10th place overall in the U13 event. This was a promising start for Abdulaziz in his first ever European tournament. Also in the U13 age group Year 8 student Rashid Al-Harib performed well to finish in 11th position while Foundation year student Waleed Zaman took 18th place.
In the U15 category Hamad Al-Amri improved on his previous year’s performance at these championships by winning three out of the five matches he played to finish in 18th position. Hamad also had opportunities in each of his other matches however unfortunately unforced error or impulsive shot selection cost him at crucial stages. Umair Zaman showed some improvements to his style of play and at times played some quality squash in the U19 division. He was able to win three of the six matches he played in his first year of this age group.
Overall the trip provided an excellent experience both on and off court for all students taking part. One which hopefully they will all learn from as they look to improve on their performances throughout the school year.
