Moscow, 22 June 2018. In the 2-1 win against Poland in their opening match at the 2018 FIFA World Cup on June 19, current KAS Eupen player Moussa Wague played 90 minutes for Senegal. The 19-year-old defender, who was part of the Aspire Football Dreams programme from 2014 to 2016, is also one of the youngest players of this tournament.
Wague gained some international experience when he represented Senegal at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand where his team finished fourth. At Aspire Zone-owned club K.A.S Eupen, he made his professional debut in the Belgian “Jupiler Pro League” in a match against Genk in January 2017. Soon after that, Wague made his senior international debut in a friendly 1-1 tie with Nigeria on 23 March 2017 and became a vital part for Senegal in the qualifying games for Russia 2018.
“It was a great feeling, being able to watch one of our own players out on the pitch playing for his country. The whole club can be proud of Moussa being nominated to play for Senegal in the World Cup, that he managed to get into the line-up for his country’s first match and that he put in such a good performance”, said Thomas Herbert, KAS Eupen’s financial director, who was watching Senegal’s game against Poland in Moscow.
In the remaining games in Group H, Senegal is facing Japan on June 24 (6pm) and Colombia on June 28 (5pm).
