Rio 16, August 2016. Aspire Academy graduate Mutaz Essa Barshim won a silver medal with a jump of 2.36m in the Olympic high jump final. Mutaz’s victory brought Qatari its first medal of the Rio games. Mutaz went one better than the last Olympic Games in London 2012 where he won bronze. Canada’s Derek Drouin cleared 2.38m to win gold with Ukraine’s Bohdan Bondarenko claiming bronze with a 2.33m jump
It is Mutaz’s second Olympic Games and he has now won as many medals. The Qatari had competed neck and neck with Drouin until he was unsuccessful with his three attempts at 2.38m to hand over the top spot to the Canadian. Mutaz’s silver is the first for the nation of Qatar which until now had won 4 bronze medals since first participating at the Olympic Games in 1984.
