Teheran, 3 February 2018. Successful start into the new athletics season for Aspire Academy graduates Mutaz Essa Barshim and Abubaker Haydar: They both managed to win gold at the “8th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships” that took place from February 1 to 3 in Teheran.

Thereby, the 26-year-old Qatari high jumper topped a world-leading 2.38m. "It was my first competition and I didn't know what to expect," Barshim said. "I just said 'I'm jumping, let's see what's going to happen’. So I'm really happy. It's my best opening ever, a championship record and a world lead. I can't complain."

Fellow Aspire graduate and middle-distance runner Abubaker Haydar showed an outstanding performance in the 800 Meters, finishing first in 1:51.98 in the final and taking home another gold medal for Qatar.
