Doha, 5 May 2016: Aspire Academy’s U-12 Feeder Team won both matches against Arsenal and Gamba Osaka to claim the latest Aspire Academy Tri-Series Tournament from May 2-4. The Academy side scored a total of six goals during the competition, three each in the two matches, and conceded just one, all while playing what spectators described as “clinical football”.
Arsenal finished in second place and Gamba Osaka, who’s best result was a 2-2 draw with the Gunners, came third. The Director of Gamba Osaka Academy, Masami Karatsu, hailed the tournament and its organisers, saying: “lt’s been a very good experience for us here in Doha, playing against teams of a standard we would not encounter normally in a wonderful tournament. For example, we have found out that, at this age, our boys are smaller than and not as quick as our opponents and we will take this valuable lesson and others back home with us.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal U-12 Head Coach, Luke Hobbs, welcomed the invitation from Aspire to a different environment, culture and football experience to that which his side is used to. “It’s been an eye opener for us being here at Aspire. Not only are the facilities here second to none, the infusion of Spanish and Dutch coaching into Aspire’s playing style bodes well for their teams and we were surprised at the quality that their players exhibit already. The Aspire team performed better than we had expected, their more direct style presenting us with challenges we are not used to back in England.”
Arsenal players Kieran Petrie and Freddie Winfield said they had thoroughly enjoyed their time in Qatar, despite having to adjust to the heat on match days. “We think the World Cup taking place here in 2022 will be awesome. The facilities are excellent and we would love to be back here for the World Cup, as any football loving people should.”
