SQUASH PLAYERS CONVINCE AT QATAR AND DOHA JUNIOR OPENS 2015

Doha, 8 March 2015. Some of the best Asian junior squash players were in Doha over the past week to compete in both the Qatar Junior Open (March 2 to 3) and the Doha Junior Open (March 4 to 5). Both tournaments are 'Silver Events' of the Asian Junior Super Series and were held back-to-back over four days at the Qatar Squash Federation in Doha.

All students of Aspire Academy took part in these events with the highlight coming from Aspire graduate scholarship holder Syed Azlan Amjad who was runner up in the Qatar Junior Open. Azlan overcame the Iranian number two seed in a tight 3/2 victory before backing up later in the day to push eventual winner Israr Ahmad of Pakistan all the way in the final. Ultimately he went down in five games but put in a spirited performance to come back from 0/2 down and force a decider. Ahmad was unseeded for both events due to a low Asian junior ranking and ironically both finalists drew each other in the first round of the Doha Junior. Unfortunately this time Azlan was beaten in straight games.

Another notable performance came from foundation year student Waleed Zaman who reached the quarter finals of the Doha Junior Open in the U13 event. Waleed would eventually finish the tournament in 7th place and displayed an enthusiastic and professional approach to each of his matches during the week.

Both Abdulwahab Al-Ishaq and Abdelaziz Omeira made the most of their draws to also reach the last 8 of their respective age categories at the Doha Junior.
