Perfect conditions in South Africa

27 Jan 2015

Doha, 27 January 2015. It’s time for an update on how our boys are doing in their respective training camps. Let’s start with the athletics team: 24 student-athletes in the jumps, throws and sprint squads of Athletics have been enjoying great training and ancillary support facilities in and around the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.

They are training twice a day in perfectly warm conditions with full support from strength and conditioning coaches, performance analyst, biomechanist, sports psychologist and physiotherapy. On Saturday, students competed in a local competition at Parow and the following Personal Bests (PB’s) were recorded: Nuh Andu with PB’s in Long Jump (6.43m), High Jump (1.90m) and 100m (11.95s);  Mohamed Yousuf Saqer with PB’s in Long Jump (6.14m) and High Jump (1.90m); Abdulla Hassan with PB’s in 400m (56s) and High Jump (1.85m) and Abdurahman Ghazal with a PB in High Jump (1.80m).  There is a great spirit amongst the athletes under the leadership of Captain Mohammed.

Staff members were treated to an inspirational seminar by Springbok Rugby World Cup (1995) winning centre, Brendan Venter, arranged by Mathew Cullen.  Brendan is an MD and, as well as achieving playing success, has coached at the elite level at London Irish and Saracens.  Brendan gave forthright views on creating a performance culture.  Following on from this session each staff member shared a presentation of their backgrounds and philosophical approach to their work within Aspire.
