Eupen, 6 November 2017. As of the sportive development within the last weeks in combination with the current standings AZF-owned club KAS Eupen arrived at the decision to set a new stimulus to successfully master the upcoming challenges by hiring former French international Claude Makélélé as new head-coach.
Board and Directorate explicitly and cordially thank former coach Jordi Condom for his exemplary commitment and his successful work during the last years with the highlights being promotion, staying in first division and Cup Semi-Final. AS Eupen cordially welcomes the new Head Coach, the Frenchman Claude Makélélé (aged 44), who besides his outstanding playing career also has relevant coaching experience in international football. Claude Makélélé, “engine” of all his teams, personifies fighting spirit and at the same time fair-play.
AS Eupen is convinced, that Claude Makélélé through his personality, experience and motivation will surely help our team and all our club to achieving our goals in the upcoming 2,5 years. Claude Makélélé is really looking forward to his new challenge in Eupen, which he will approach with maximum energy.
The Champions League winner of 2002 acted as assistant coach to Carlo Ancelotti and then Laurent Blanc at Paris Saint-Germain between 2011 and 2014. He took over the reigns at Ligue 1 side Bastia briefly before a short managerial post at Monaco. In January he joined Swansea's managerial team, being reunited with Clement, who was on the coaching staff when Makélélé was at Chelsea and again with the former defensive midfielder at PSG.
