07 Dec 2015
Zurich, 7 December 2015. One of Europe’s major junior squash competitions, the 2015 ‘Swiss Junior Open’, concluded on Sunday in Zurich, Switzerland. Aspire Academy had 11 players competing at this year’s event against a strong field of international players.
Of the boys competing the highest placing came from Aspire Graduate Umair Zaman who finished in 13th position in the Under-19 competition. Umair played a more consistent brand of squash throughout the tournament and was rewarded with his highest ever placing at a major junior event of this level.
Other students to achieve top 16 placings were Hamad Al-Amri who took 14th place in the Under-17 category while in the Under-15 event Waleed Zaman edged out fellow Aspire training partner Rashid Al-Harib in their final playoff match. This meant they finished in 15th and 16th place respectively. Both Waleed and Rashid have another year in the Under-15 age group and have made steady improvements to their playing standard over the past few months.
Ibrahim Al-Darwish managed to win his opening match to reach the top 16 in his second ever European junior tournament in the Under 13 category. Yousef Elsaka also won his final three matches in the same age group to finish in 17th.
