STUDENT-ATHLETES AND GRADUATES CLAIM 41 MEDALS AT GCC GAMES

21 May 2026

Among the highlights for Aspire Academy student-athletes and graduates at the 4th GCC Games in Doha was a gold medal for former Olympic and World high jump champion Mutaz Barshim.

He was one of 24 Aspire Academy student-athletes and graduates to win medals for Team Qatar at the Games, which featured competitors from all six Gulf nations across 17 different sports.

The student-athletes and graduates won a total of 42 medals: 18 gold, 12 silver, and 12 bronze, in six different sports: athletics, fencing, table tennis, swimming, padel and shooting to help Qatar finish top of the medals table for the Games.

Barshim, who was jumping competitively for the first time in more than a year, chose to share gold with Oman’s Fatak Bait Jaboob rather than have a jump-off after both men failed three times at 2.19.

The joint gold was reminiscent of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo when Barshim shared the top step of the podium with Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi.

There was also an outstanding Games for 2022 graduate, Mohamed Mahmoud, in the pool, as he claimed 6 gold medals and a silver medal.

In addition to our graduates and student-athletes competing, Aspire Academy also hosted six sports during the Games.
