27 May 2019

Tychy, 27 May 2019. The Qatar U20 football national team went down fighting against Ukraine as they fell to a second successive defeat in the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup Group D match at the Tychy Stadium yesterday.

The 1-0 win sealed Ukraine’s place in the knockout phase, with the European side having edged USA 2-1 in their opening tie. For Qatar, who lost to Nigeria 4-0 in their tournament opener on Friday, defeat means their knockout stage hopes are hanging by a thread.

Denys Popov was the Ukraine hero, with the defender scoring his second consecutive winning goal at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland. After an evenly-contested first half, Popov headed home in the 59th minute on a second-chance opportunity from an initial corner for the Ukrainians. Serhii Buletsa provided the delivery for his second assist of the competition.Things went from bad to worse for Qatar as captain Nasir Peer was shown a straight red card for a late tackle on Maksym Chekh.

Qatar play USA in their final group match on Thursday.
