DESPITE SEMI-FINAL LOSS, QATAR’S CHANCE FOR RIO IS STILL ALIVE

Doha, 27 January 2016. Qatar’s unbeaten run at the AFC U23 Championships came to an end on Tuesday night when the Qatari team lost   3 - 1 in a dramatic semi-final game against the Republic of Korea at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium. The team’s chance of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games is very much still alive however.

While Qatar’s shot at claiming the championship title evaporated thanks to two late goals by the Republic of Korea team, the hosts face Iraq on Friday in a bid for the third and final qualifying place at the Rio de Janeiro Games in August.

“The upcoming game is a very important one, At stake is a ticket to the Olympics. We know that it’s not going to be easy, because Iraq is one of the top teams playing in the Asian Football Confederation, We will our very best and hope for a positive result on Friday,” said Qatar’s coach Felix Sanchez.

Qatar will play against Iraq on Friday, January 29 at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, at 5:45pm in the third and fourth place play-off. South Korea faces Japan in the AFC U23 Championships Final on Saturday at 5:45 pm, at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium.
