ASPIRE AWARDED BY QOC FOR ITS ROLE IN SUPPORTING SPORT IN QATAR

Doha, 19 November 2018. On Sunday morning, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) held a special ceremony at Aspire Academy to mark Sport Excellence Day and recognize those who make the country's sport achievements a reality and advance its sporting march.

Hundreds of Qatars athletes, coaches, stakeholders and Aspire student were present to celebrate the successes of Team Qatar over the past year and encourage them to continue to keep their country proud.

Speaking during the event, President of Qatar Olympic Committee HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani said: "Development of athletes to reach the highest level is a top priority of the Qatar Olympic Committee as it is a part of the QOC strategy which is aligned to support Qatar National Vision 2030. Team Qatar had a successful year across many sports as medals were won, records were broken. The athletes continued to perform and bring home many glorious titles.

"Thank you for your commitment and dedication to building the sporting culture of Qatar. Today we are here to celebrate some of the successes. It is also important to recognize the commitment and skills of the incredibly talented coaches who support our Team Qatar athletes to reach their full potential.

"Doha in the coming years will continue to host internationally recognized world-class sport events such as IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, World Championships 2023 and IJF Masters 2020, 2023 FINA World Championships," HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani added.

During the ceremony, Aspire Zone Foundation received the award for “Distinguished Organization in Supporting Sport and Organizing Social Sport Programmes.”  Mohammed Khalifa Al-Suwaidi, CEO of Aspire Zone Foundation, said: “As one of the main pillars of sports in Qatar, it makes us very proud to receive this award. It’s a result of the exemplary work of Aspire’s member organizations Aspire Academy, Aspire Logistics, Aspetar and their nearly 2000 employees. Without their great effort we would not be here today. We see this award also as an encouragement to continue our path and to work even harder in the future.”

Among the celebrated athletes were Aspire Academy graduates such as Mutaz Essa Barshim, who was awarded as “Male Athlete of the Year Award”. Furthermore, Ashraf El-Seify and Abubaker Haydar were recognized for their achievements at the 2018 Asian Games, while current Aspire-athlete Owaab Barrow received the award for “Qatar Athletics Federation Promising Male Athlete of the Year.”
